sister chromatids are connected by centromers in the center of the cell, and are attached by spindle fibers to centrioles at either end of the cell. When the spindle fibers are broken down rapidly near the centrioles, it tightens the spindle fibers and pulls the sister chromatids towards the centrioles.

In mitotic anaphase, sister chromatids are pulled apart towards poles. In meiotic anaphase, homologous pairs are pulled apart- the maternal to one pole, and the paternal to the other.
