i'm in my early 50s. as a girl, the biggest deal in the hood was when a woman was raped in our lobby. we NEVER heard of serial killers until richard speck seemed to start it all with his mass murder of nurses in chicago.

today, it is not abnormal that a young man, perhaps 40, will mutilate his ex wife or ex girlfriend via tying her up in a basement, smacking her on the head with a hammer, cutting her face and her chest, towards her heart, punching her in the face, and lighting a torch in order to burn her, just so that, per his jaded mind, he will "hurt" her the way "she" hurt him.

and that is not the worst example that we can come up with, is it? in the past 40 years in the united states, violence of all sorts has risen dramatically, serial rapes and killings and dismemberments are almost considered normal!

why do we allow this? where are our morals? where are our values? is it okay that just "anything" goes these days, as was allowed in the fall of Rome?

WHO AMONGST YOU is against allowing "anything" to go on in our society? who will make a stance to have nothing to do whatsoever with evils existent in our land? for example, this is easy: if you hit a person with your car, would you stop and get him to the hospital? that is right, isn't it? and why must little children feel this "stranger danger?" when i was a girl, i didn't worry about the house painter having any ulterior motive when he gave me a dollar to go to our local five and dime and buy myself a little dolly.

who of you will stand up and disallow these things, and stop them from polluting your mind, your life, and the lives of your neighbors? would you stand by doing nothing if you heard a woman screaming as she is raped? what would you do?

I cry out for the crazyness to stop but very few engage enough to listen or care. Family values are no where. And the far right is just as bad as the far left. As Americans we need to find our balance.

Yes, like Rome we are snowballing to distaster. It is just too predictable.

You act like being a normal caring human being is something new. And things really haven’t changed since you were little there about the same. Just media has changed and gotten more advanced so you hear about those things more often. How many people do you actually know that have been raped or murdered? I bet your parents knew about the same number of people that have. Society is becoming alot stupider though day by day. We need to improve the education system. Bad education is the cause to every single thing wrong with the world.

I think we are all naturally violent, but we keep in check through the morals we are taught, through fear of punishment, through our rules and our laws.

Just look at babies, they don't know about morals, or rules, or the such - if they could they would murder you just for taking their dummies away, or not feeding them when they're hungry. We are a naturally violent species.

It's when we are allowed to be violent that we really feel free.

Don't tell me you've never gotten angry? How good doesn't it feel to let it all out?

I think this is why we have such a fascination for serial killers, they show us what we're capable of when we are not held back by morals, rules, or laws, when we have no fear of punishment.

EDIT**Ok, so I received a message from Louiegirl_Chicago, telling me how angry she was about my answer. I won't modify what I've written. I stand by what's there. I believe that we are a naturally violent species, you can just look around you, if we were as sociable as you say, we would have no need for a Defence Force, or a Police Force - I don't expect you to agree with my view, it is only my opinion, but please don't shove your views down my throat.
