Top officials in the Serbian government were directly involved in conducting the assasination of foreign leaders, leaders of a much stronger power. Frankly, I think Austria reacted with amazing restraint. Take the time someday and read the actual demands of Austria upon Serbia concerning these murders. You will see that basically all Austria asked was for Serbia to turn over known criminals and to assist in stopping terrorism. Certainly nothing less could be asked by any sovereign state then or today.

As for Germany starting the war that is rubbish. Czarist Russia was the first to order mobilization. Most of Europe and Germany in particular had a long standing fear of Russian expansionism and militarism. When the Czar refused, despite some pleadings from his own counsel, to stop the mobilization, Germany had no alternative but to begin mobilization also as a defensive measure.

Unfortunately for Western Civilization, Germany had only one basic military plan. Once mobilization began, the German army must attack west. The plan was to quickly defeat the French and then turn on Russia. At the time, Russia was considered by ALL world leaders to possess the greatest military potential. Germany believed she would need all her strength to oppose the Russian forces. The attack west brought in the English and ultimately the Americans.

Back to the root causes, had the Serbians not backed terrorism and had Russia not ordered mobilization first, then WWI would not have occurred....at least not in 1914.

A man named Princip, started WW1. He assassinated The ArchDuke Frances Ferdinand and his wife, Duchess Sophie. The Archduke was the heir to the throne of the Austrian-Hungary Empire.

Answer

The war was started by the assasination of the heir to the Austrian throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia, a province of Austria at the time.(June, 28, 1914) Serbia had always wanted to crush the Serbs in Bosnia and Serbia itself, who was helping Austrian- Serbs in an uprising against Austria. Since the Serbs had always faught the Austrian government and threatened their "patchwork" quilt of nations, Austria used the assasination of Franz Ferdinand as an excuse to send an ultimatum to Serbia. The ultimatum included 5 primary demands: 1. the Serbian government would supress all propaganda coming out of Serbia against Austria-Hungary 2. Serbia would forbid anti- Austria lessons in schools 3. Serbia was to fire officials spreading anti-Austria propaganda 4. there would be a trial of the members of the "Mloda Bosnia" and the "Black hand" terrorist/uprising group in an Austrian Hungarian court 5. Serbia must accept these terms in 48 hours. Serbia accepted all demands but one; they wanted the trial to take place in Serbia. Than Austria had what it had always wanted, an excuse to crush Serbia; they declared war against Serbia on July 28. Russia, who had always supported the Serbs because of their common origins ordered partial mobilisation against Austria Hungary. Germany had already agreed to help Austria- Hungary in the event of war and had given Austria a "blank cheque". At this time Russia, Germany, Serbia and Austria are prepared to fight. And with this Austria- Serbia conflict the World War 1 started and later grew with France, England, Belgium and many other nations.

Kaiser Wilhelm personally started WWI. Due to the entanglement of alliances, he declared war on Czarist Russia when there was still the possibilities for negotiation. Up to then, the war could have been contained and would have gone down in history as the "Third Balkan War." But, the German plan of defense was, that if war appeared to be inevitable, Germany should strike first to gain the advantage of surprise and be able to fight the battles on the enemy's soil. Kaiser Bill knew, fulwell, that if he attacked Russia that act would bring France and Britain into the war and escalate the conflict into a world war. Kaiser Bill, personally gave the order to declare war on Russia when he could have done otherwise. After the war many people wanted to hang the Kaiser, but he got off and lived out the rest of his life in exile in Holland. The argument could be made that, because WW II was, fundamentally, a continuation of WW I, Kaiser Wilhelm started both war with Adolf Hitler simply serving as his surogate. Richard E. Osborne

The same country that started World War 2: Germany.

World War One started when Austria declared war on Serbia. Then Germany jumped in and declared war on Russia and France

Answer

World War I was officially started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, a Balkan nation. However, there were many events leading up to this point. Tensions were high between industrialized countries over colonies. Tensions were also caused by the nationalism that different nationality groups within empires had. Many countries also formed alliances for mutual defense. The Triple Alliance, between Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary, and the Triple Entente, between France, Great Britain, and Russia, were formed. (Although later, Italy joined the Allies...) So, tensions were high in 1914 when Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by a Slavic nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia, Serbia's historic protector, mobilized the borders of Austria-Hungary and Germany, a likely ally of Austria-Hungary. Germany demanded that Russia stop its threatening acts and demanded France to stay neutral if war were to break out. Both refused. Germany declared war on Russia on August 1 and declared war on France on August 3. (I think the year was 1914.) Germany went through the neutral country of Belgium to attack. Great Britain declared war on Germany on August 4 because of this. Then, a great war was started, using U-boats (submarines, introduced by Germany), poison gas, tanks, and machine guns for the first time...

The German mobilisation plan was known as the Schlieffen Plan, and was based to a great extent on the use of the railways (as indeed were the mobilisation plans of all the great powers).

Germany had an alliance with Austria-Hungary meaning that each would act in the other's defence if attacked; Britain, France and Russia had a similar alliance and Britain had a treaty obligation guaranteeing the neutrality of Belgium.

Local conflict between the Austro-Hungarian Imperial powers and militant nationalists had been simmering for years i.e. the Balkan Wars.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was warned that it was too dangerous to visit Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, in August 1914 as there were rumours of a Serb-backed plot to assasinate him, but he ignored the advice and went anyway.

The first attempt on his life was a bomb which seriously injured several bystanders but left the Archduke and his wife unhurt. It was on a trip to the hospital to visit the injured (against the advice of his chauffer, who wanted to go straight back to the train station), that the Archduke and his wife were shot dead by Princip, who had been waiting in reserve in case the bomb failed.

Within the space of a few days, Austria then declared war on Serbia, Russia declared war on Austria, Germany declared war on Russia and France, and in order to invade France marched through Belgium, at which point Britain declared war on Germany.

Because of the German invasion of Belgium the Kaiser Wilhelm II and the German nation as a whole were held responsible for the war by Britain and her allies.

On a logistical scale, the technological advances of the industrial revolution, particularly in transport, communications and military affairs, made the mobilisation of vast numbers of men and the equally massive casualty levels possible. These included the invention of the howitzer and the machine gun, armoured vehicles, poison gas, submarines and aerial bombing and reconnaisance.

NB: Most casualties were caused by blast & shrapnel.
