Simply remember the MAIN causes:

M- militarism
A- alliances
I- imperialism
N- nationalism

Each of these factors contributed to the start of the first World War. The one event that set off the chain reaction was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (yes, it's a real person, not just a band!) At this time in history, countries were splitting and unifying, creating militaries of their own. Germany, who had been left out of the Imperialism Era due to problems unifying was angry and out for 'a piece of the pie'. Countries went, quite frankly, alliance happy. It was due to alliances that the sides of the war were decided.

England officially declared war on Germany after the Germans invaded Belgium in an attempt to capture Paris; but England was allied to Belgium and thus declared war to maintain their side of the alliance. The United States remained neutral in order to sell weaponry to both sides and make more money. The US joined the Allies only after Germany began attacking US ships with submarine warfare. Italy dropped their alliance with Germany and remained neutral through the war.

The failing of empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian), the emergence of an empire (Germany)
Previous conflicts (Franco German 1870, Balkan wars), the interlocking of treaties, the problem of mobilisation, with its balance of defence and aggression. (almost like nuclear weapons now...
"It's only for for defence... No, that's a threat!")

The BBC source pages on WW1 are some of the best. (URL1)
And to avoid swallowing myths, I recommend:
"Mud Blood and Poppycock" Gordon Corrigan
"Forgotten Victory" Gary Sheffield
(the latter author has an article on "the origins of WW1 (URL 2) )

Lydia, that was a good answer except you need to do more work on Italy! Italy was allied with France and Britain, but needed propping up with French and British divisions, even latterly an American one. Have a look at the battle of Caporetto, and an early episode in the career of one Erwin Rommel.
