I'm really trying hard not to think that there is a genetic basis for it.

Both groups come here speaking little or no English, with little or no money. Fast forward, and the Asian family have children that graduated top public and private colleges, well on their way to being leaders in the top corridors of power in corporations, non-profits, and government. The Hispanic family meanwhile is still struggling to rise out of the lower-middle-class, watching "Sabado Gigante" on saturday nights, and working as hard laborers, mechanics, and gardeners.
Again, I really hate to think that it's genetic. I'd love to think that its a cultural problem. If so, how can we change it? Why is the janitor in my office here vacuuming as I speak Hispanic, and the investment banker trainee that walked the other way just now oriental? Why have I never seen an oriental janitor, for that matter?

My feeling is only the smartest asians left. The masses remain.
Masses of anything are backward........

Most hispanic immigrants come from rural farming areas where people don't need and don't have much education. And that's why they don't push their kids to have the best education, when they come to USA. They are used to a simple life. And that's the kind of life they prepare their children for.

And there is nothing wrong with this kind of attitude in life. If everybody tries to be an investment banker, then who will sweep the streets?

All trades and professions are good and honorable.

Most asian immigrants come from big cities where education is a must to get ahead in life. And that's how they raise their kids, when they come to USA.

Asians and hispanics grow up in different family environments. And this is what makes them different when they grow up.

The Asians education system is alot more advanced and strict then ours. They go to school in Asian countries alot more then most countries. At least that’s what I heard but overall they seem like they are the most disciplined ethnic group. And Hispanics mostly come from Mexico. Which isn’t the richest country in the world and the education system isn’t the best. But hell our education system is horrible too which is why the US is starting to be eclipsed by the other countries.

I know plenty of SE Asians who's parents are on welfare, work as janitors, drink, smoke, get arrested for petty crimes like picking up hookers, and cheat on their wives, while their kids have committed murders, joined gangs, sell and use drugs, party all the time, have mediocre jobs, wives, kids, divorce, gambling problems, cheating on their wives, etc. It's not about Asian, it's something to do with Japan or China maybe, or to do with parents who are strict, more of which come from Japan and China, where Buddhism has taught moderation, rather than Christianity which has taught violence and self-destructive denial through vices.

The same reason why someone of a different ethnicity than myself ( I am African American) called me a "gringo/foreigner" while we both reside in the U.S. and thought it was funny. I don't think he meant anything by it and was just trying to make small talk. But my answer is because of our cultural backgrounds. At young ages we are all taught different customs and our cultures are different. All of my Asian friends insist take my shoes upon entering their home and feel it is disrespectful if I don't. Many families do things like that, but I am just giving you an example.

Many hispanics came to the country illegally in search of manual labor. Many asians came to the county legally to study or work in skilled positions (very difficult to illegally cross the border from Asia to America).

Because you are seeing them now. Almost every group that immigrated to America didn't have anything when they got here. Asians have been here at least since the building of the railroads.

Good morning.

Oriental cultures are geared more to hard work and education & being lazy is looked down on. Hispanic cultures are more laid back while still being hard workers, but put a lot less emphasis on education.

Hispanics just need to focus more on education. Give them a generation or two and it'll all work out.

here in the philippines, most people who go to the us are professionals and middle-class. whats left in our country are the uneducated. every year, 2000 filipino doctors leave the country causing the closure of many hospitals and medical schools every year! and many fresh graduate students go immediately abroad. if our professionals will keep going out, our country will suffer big time.
