They explain Kakashi's past in the Kakashi Gaiden of the manga (Kakashi special).

Seems they decided to skip this in Shippudent and go right to part to although maybe it will show up in the next movie.

Basically he was a very smart ninja for his age. He was grouped with a Uchiha (Obito) who was pretty much similar to naruto, and a girl who knew medical jutsu.

They went on a mission and kakashi thought he could do things his way and ended up caught and lossing his eye in battle. He didn't like obito at that time and didn't want to work as a team with him. But when their teammate got caught, Obito said he would save teammate then to leave them behind. At first kakashi didn't care, but then he realized Obito was right and went to help him. Unfortunatly he came a little too late, and in the end Obito was crushed with a rock and was dying. They reconciled at the time Kakashi had showed up to help and threw away his pride. Obito's dying wish was for their teammate to put his sharingan eye into kakashi's missing eye, and that's how he got sharingan.

That's about most of what they explained in the kakashi gaiden. and is why he thinks so highly of teamwork, as he knows the mistake when you dont, all too well.
