In order to have a really good smash, you need to have a very flexible wrist - flicking your wrist is what gives it the strength and speed. I competed in badminton when I was in high school and we used to exercise our wrists by holding our rackets and swinging it back and forth as fast as possible only using our wrists.

Also, make sure that you're stretching your wrists enough - if you kneel and press the palms of your hands to the ground with your fingers facing toward you (and your wrists facing out in front of you) and then sit back on your heels, you'll get a good stretch through your forearms. You can also bend your hand all the way toward your forearm and then all the way back using your other hand (that stretches both directions and helps prevent 'tennis elbow' and that kind of stuff).

Beyond that, it just takes a lot of practice. Stand at half-court with a box full of birds and just hit smashes (or have someone hit birds to you that come to half-court).

I always thought that smashes were one of the most difficult parts of badminton, but just keep practicing with the wrist snap and it will get better.

You don't need big muscles. Just strong muscles that can work for a long duration. I've never seen a badminton player with an impressive muscular body.

While bookie04 is correct that you need strong wrists, power is an overall combination of strength and speed. Anything that increases your racquet speed with strength, will result in a faster smash, and wrists are just part of the answer. Your whole arm, shoulder, your core, and your legs can all be used to increase the speed of your smash. If you're familiar with baseball, think of a pitcher's mechanics. They need strong arms, but their legs give them much of their power.
