Vista X32 would understand as much as 3gb no remember what version, yet there's a patch so as that it's going to understand 4gb. top rate ought to run on 1gb, with little issues. 1gb with problem-loose is plenty.

You need to know exactly what type of memory you can use, my 2Gb of Patriot DDR2 800 is very good, cheaper than most that people have been recommending and yet out performing them too (it's actually rated to 1000MHz but I haven't bothered messing with my motherboard timings yet).
Once you know what type of RAM you can use check the reviews at tomshardware.com, hardocp.com and anandtech.com. Memory costs quite a lot and you owe it to yourself to get the real lowdown rather than asking a bunch of random people most of whom don't know a thing and still speak with certainty.
