Surely this has to be the USA and the USSR as was ?

I can remember growing up thinking that one or other of these nations was on the verge of "pushing the button" and destroying the whole of mankind in a nuclear holocaust.

The Bay of Pigs incident was a real and frightening event that could easily have spilled over into another global conflict.

I vote for Britain and France for the sheer longevity of their hatred against one another, which started in at least the 1300s and lasted 'til probably the early 1800s, with varying degrees of antipathy.

You could argue it started with William the Conqueror, too, and the dislike between the Normans and the Saxons, but it definitely stemmed from the Hundred Years' War (really the Edwardian War) starting in the early 1300s and would have probably gone on longer than it did if not for Britain's surging empire in the late 1700s-early 1800s contrasting with France in ruins after the Revolution and desperate for whatever help it could get, even from its ancient rival, lacking the firepower to keep the vendetta going.

Their have been some big ones.

Rome vs Carthage.
Big rivalry, but didn't last that long.

England vs France.
Lasted centuries. We fought each other all over the world. I'd say it continues today.

Spain vs Ottoman Empire.
Less well known. The two powers tussled for domination of the Mediterranean.

France vs Germany.
Started with the splitting of the Frankish Empire into East (Germany) and West (France). Culminated in WWI.

China vs Japan.
On and off for many years. China ultimately prevailed for most of the conlfict, but lost out in WWII.

England vs the rest of the British Isles.
Many wars for centuries. England ultimately prevailed as the dominant country.

Byzantine Empire vs Islam.
The Islamic forces assaulted the Empire for centuries. Lead to the Crusades. Ended with the fall of Constantinople (Istanbul)

China vs Islam.
Competitiors for worlds leading power. Came to a head at battle of Talas - Muslim victory. Overall, both were outdone by Europe.

Britain vs Germany.
Naval arms race before WWI.

USA vs USSR.
Most recent. Nuclear arms race, idealistic clash and many puppet wars. USA prevailed.

P.S. France wasn't ruined after the Revolution. It attacked Europe, eventually under Napolean. After that, the vendetta did continue, the nations coming to blows several times over their empires.

USA and USSR. Both countries have rising distrust between one another. This caused their countries from all over to take sides and they have even interfered in many events in other countries, including Cuban Missle Crisis, the Vietnam War and Korean War.

England and France.

or

Rome and Carthage.

Both for similar reasons. The rose to power at the same time, were geographically close and had competition for the same colonial/imperial territory.
