I disagree with the other guy: if you really love guitar, play guitar: it's a very rewarding, versatile instrument. My best advice is this (it's a technique I use to warm up frequently): alternate-pick the low E string as you fret the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th frets in sequence. Then do the same thing on the A string, then the D, and so on. Once you get to the high E, start back down, but this time going on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th frets in that order. Keep switching from going up to going down and sliding the pattern up at each end, till you go as high as you can. It'll kick your *** at first, but focus on getting it smooth, clear and even, and eventually you'll be a really smooth player.

To me the single most important thing about starting to learn guitar is have a good instrument, not some cheap guitar with the strings too far away from the frets so you have to push to hard to get a clean sound. It might cost more but a good guitar is worth the money. Take a few lessons from a proven teacher because they can help you with technique, proper fingering and tricks of the trade.

Stop playing, and start playing bass or drums. You'll be much happier in the long run. Guitar players are a dime a dozen. Look in any musicians wanted ads, you'll see a need for bass, and drums. The guys below me are fine with another barre-chord banging neanderthal polluting the world. Take from a paid professional, who's music has been on the TV show ER, and independant films. The world needs less guitar players...Or go with the mediocraty below me crying wolf, and resorting to name calling. Come on...Crazy Train, and Guns N' Roses? Have some dignity.

I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think of your playing. If you want to impress them, figure out what songs are popular and try to learn them through Internet tabs. Also, if you are a new guitar player, I wouldn't walk around calling your songs masterpieces. Just an FYI there.

when i started 20 years ago, i wanted to play Ozzy and GNR right off the bat. instead i was picking down in the valley and Yankee doddle. i thought i was a rockstar. i had fun playing but after 3-5 hours a day of non stop practice, i rais my head high and tell them to go f*ck them selves now. just practice dude. it all comes in time. a little sweat now and you will be rewarded later. good luck!!!!!

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, i used to practice for 8 hours a day, if you get stuck on something, play through it and try something else, don`t get frustrated, try playing Stairway to Heaven, it`s a great beginner song because it teaches you strumming cords, finger picking, and a really nice blues scale solo.
