I had the belts changed recently (within the month) I live in NY and there was a snow storm....when I drove away the next morning there was a loud screaming noise intermittently only when I stepped on the gas and went away after I depressed the accelerator. I put WD-40 on all the belts and the noise still intermittently comes. What should I do? What could it be? 1986 BMW 325e

Sometimes new belts have to be retightened due to stretching. The sound you are hearing is a belt slipping.

The WD40 was a mistake. I don't know who told you to lubricate the belt, but I wouldn't take any auto advice from them again.

Sounds like one of the belts has not enough tension and is slipping. The WD-40 may be a mistake and can even aggravate the problem as it is a lubricant and can cause even more slippage. It could even be that during install some one got grease on one of the belts and that is causing the slippage. You might try filling a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and spraying the belts while the car is running at idle and see if you can clean the belts that way.

They are correct about the WD-40. It was a squeal, not a squeak. You are going to have to use alcohol to get the WD-40 off and then spray the belts with Belt Dressing. You probably also need to get the idler arm tightened.

Firstly..holy crap..WD40 is not what you put on belts. But never mind.

The fact is the scream is a belt slipping. It is slipping because it is not tensioned properly...ie it is too lose. It will take less than 5 minutes to retension....go back to the guy who did it. A new belt need retensioning after the car has been run for 10 minutes anyway.

Simple, just tighten the Tension on the Belts.

I think that you should check your idler pully. It is there to keep the belt tight, and may be wearing out under the stress from the new belt, or an installation mistake.
