yes, the ip address is like the phone number that a computer dials to reach another one. the ip address is linked to the canonical name like www.yahoo.com www.msn.com

you can give the canonical one but it just looks up the other one anyway. it's easier for people to say, go to yahoo then go to 95.215.32.24

IP Address

Identification and Communication

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol or TCP/IP is the main ‘protocol’ or communications language for the Internet. It allows computers on the Internet to talk to each other. Each computer is given an IP address, which uniquely identifies it. IP addresses are allocated by a DHCP server and these names are translated into the corresponding numbers by ‘DNS servers’.

This page details how to check that your computer has TCP/IP protocols installed. TCP/IP is a set of instructions that tell your computer how to communicate with other computers over the network.

Yes it is. There are cloacking software that you can get to hide your own IP address. It assigns you an IP address from other areas. There are some free software you can download from the internet.

By the way, your IP address is assigned automatically so there isn't anything extra that you have to do get one.

No, open a command prompt and type
Tracert www.microsoft.com
The output will start with your IP address and continue over every hop to get to Microsoft. No IP address is needed as long as you get a response outside of your ISP, your good.

No, go to start-control panel-network connections and yours should be there and then click on it and it should say enabled or disabled if enabled it should give the speed of the connection. If it's slow and a highspeed LAN connection click on repair to see if it speeds it up.
Or go to start-run type in cmd and then type in
ping www.yahoo.com if it sends and recieves 4 packets your fine.
