In this sentence, would I use "laid" or "lain"?

The sentence is, "Have you ever lain for hours in your bed, trying to write a beautiful poem that would describe exactly how you were feeling at that exact point in time?"

Which would it be? As you can see, I've used lain, but it doesn't sound right to me... Is it?

Thanks for your help!

Lain. It probably doesn't sound right, because we so often avoid it in speech. "Lay" and "lie" tenses are a real pain lol.

Laid

I believe that, in this case, you would use "Lain." Normally, if you were gonig to use "Laid" it would be in a sentence structure such as "He laid down on the bed and then went to sleep" as apposed to "He had lain in bed for hours, fast asleep." Laid is kind of like the present-tense of the action "Lay" whereas "Lain" would better fit your hypothetical past-tense.

The word to be used is laid

laid-however you shouldn't force a poem or an emotion or a response to a thought-implying you might create a beautiful poem on demand -these things happen when you least expect it-so be ready to jot it down when it happens

Laid perhaps is the right word

I would say lain. Lain is a past participle of lie; laid is a past participle of lay.

Do you "Lie for hours in your bed," or do you "lay for hours in your bed"?
