Daffy Dan's RULES in the NY/NJ metro area, don't let the stupid name fool you-- this is Italian/French haute coutre even Juicy. Lamb lines, and not knock-offs, the real deal and at prom time stock full of "it" dresses, always has a good selection of basic black cocktail dresses. Hey, we converge in Boston for that awesome wedding gown sale, allthough, my prom time has long passed, I still look good. and am usually a braid's maid at someone's re-marriage yearly. Dont't laugh check out Loehmann's, usually the place to go if your the mother-of -the bride, but worth a check. Don't forget the rise of vintage store's, haute coutre at a bargain, in my experience do not buy over the internet--fakes, that you can't tailor. Go to an actually vintage store. Also, don't forget outlet stores--high-end like Sak's Fithh Ave. or Barney's , must have some near you. Really search Daffydans.com, if they are close , take the trip. Awesome, hot, dresses. Also, I know you don't want to hear this but: if it is not your Senior Prom, 10, 11th grade just pick a pretty dress and go!!! Enjoy..All the best. You are no doubt pretty enough, the Senior Prom is the statement prom, evenough so, you will laugh 10 years about the aniexty, and it will just be a minor event, a great one, then college!! And formals and semi-formals, so don't stress it!!

If you want a good dress for your prom it takes a lot of time - you dont want to end up wearing the same thing as EVERYONE else. Try going to filenes basement first- to get a look around and see what they have. After youre done there- you will be able to compare the dresses you saw. Another good option is to go to the second hand shops, they usually have unique dresses that with small alterations can be great.
If you have a bigger budget go to places like betsey johnson. Shop around prudential and copley.
I used to live in boston and LOVED shopping there. I always found something.
If not- go to www.bluefly.com look at the dresses they have and then go to places like macys to try on similar dresses by the designer, that way you know if you like the fit and size- then order it off bluefly for SO much cheaper.
another internet site might be delias?

I agree with EB about second hand shops. However, I just usually refuse to shop retail, unless I seriously, literally need the article of clothing and I can no longer hope and pray to find it second hand. (Especially since I have size 11 feet, which I often stuff into 10s, they're not to common in the thrift stores. I think because big footed women like me know that when they find the shoe, to hang onto it until it dies.)

Do you own touches to it. If you do thirft hand, and alter it, you could probably do your dress for under $20. If you already have a pair of dress shoes that are broken in, better. This way, you save money on shoes and you don't have to worry about them being uncomfortable. I don't know what girls do now, but I remmeber girls would buy pretty new shoes for the dances at my high school (roughly 15 years ago) only to take them off soon after they got to the dance. Even then, I could see the impracticality of that.

Have fun.

I am not sure if there is a Jcpenny's in Boston, but they have a whole line of affordable prom dresses. They even had a fashion show in the mall showing all the new prom dresses they just got in.
