If so, can you give me an idea of spending a year ... not in a crowded urban setting, but in a smaller more rural area in the south and travel around the country via train, bus, etc. An occasional side trip to northern italy or france, and spain.
I will be retiring at 68 and am interested in living in Portugal for at least 10-12 months.

So many American live there, i personally don't know any, but i know may famous celebrities have mansions there. But you should find most retired Americans in the central and south of Portugal. (Algarve)

There is an Air Force base there, Lajes Field. It's in the Azores.

I'd recommend ecuador....ALOT cheaper than europe and you will be treated like a king.
