What causes adolescents or teens to use drugs ?

Question

I guess I was lacking something as a parent .... I can say I've never used drugs or encouraged them but ....

What would cause a teen to try any drugs or just about every drug available ?

Is there something or a way to bring them up that is very effective in preventing them from self destructive behavior ?

Any clues would be helpful.

Now a days kids self medicate themselves for several reasons. Problems at home, depression, or they can have undiagnosed mental problems such as ADHD and other mental issues. They try and find easy ways to cope with the world around them. My suggestion is to be very much involved in your childrens lives, a parent knows when there child is not themselves, look for changes, but stay in tune with what is going on in their lives. Get to know friends, girlfriends, where they hand out etc...

I was doing drugs at 13teen. My reasons were for attention. Then I started doing it to ease the pain. Just be there for your kids. Always talk about it to them. Their is something else that they are hidding besides drugs. Most do it cause they feel left out,not enough attention. Their is a reason.

Not feeling wanted. Having a parent that doesn't care, or seem to care. Peer pressure. Parental favorites. To see if someone really cares enough about you to not have you hurt yourself.
Some of these are the same for cutting and suicide. Life hurts when no one cares.

Lots of times drug usage or addictive behaviors run in families, and its sometimes inevitable.

But personally I think its boredom. Bunch of kids sitting around listening to their ipods and stuff and saying, "there's nothing to do"
