Yes, he cloned himself but, he didn't know if he was the one to drown or the one that reappears on the balconey. Apparently each time the first/orignal was the one to reappear one the balconey.
They thought the machines was broken but, when he left and went into the woods he found a lot of cloned version of his hats and they used the machine on the cat there was a clone of the cat with the hats. So, basically the machine was working just not in the way they expected it to. To make exact copies but, to reappear somewhere else. But, to hide his great secret he had to kill his clones or people would go crazy if there was more then on Danton walking around. Plus if his friend found out at first then that would have ruined Danton.

I love the movie too! All right, the part where Danton keeps dying involves the clone machine. As you know, the machine was meant to make him disappear; however, it ended up cloning him instead. With this power, he was able to walk through the door and fall through the trap door, which contained a water tank under it. His clone (which had already been made) would then proceed to go up the trap door on the other side of the stage. He had to kill himself each time so that two of him wouldn't exist. The only way to ensure this (since no one would voluntarily be killed, clone or otherwise), was to make himself drown as soon as he went through the trap door. This explains why he is both dead and alive; the original Danton drowned in the tank, while clone Danton continued to live. Except it wasn't really the original Danton because he was a clone himself from a previous performance...God, this stuff makes your head spin! You might want to see the Illusionist, which was also an awesome magician movie.

In Danton's transporter man he walks into electricity and the trap door opens and he falls into water tank and drowns and his clone is the one that shows up. So basically he just kept cloning himself and in the end when he dies by getting shot you see all the water tanks with the dead clones. The old man that kept helping him would be downstairs making sure the clone would get locked in the tank so no one would find out how he did his trick.

Yes, the electricity machine makes copies of whatever goes into-in this case Danton. So, every time he does the trick, another clone of him is made and then drowns in the tank.

Remember the very first shot of the movie - all those hats?
When Angier went to see Tesla, he thought he was pursuing Borden's secret to performing The Transported Man because he read it in his diary. It turned out the diary was a wild goose chase, Borden wrote all about Tesla to throw Angier off track.
(And his secret was that Borden was really two identical twins, and not one man!)
Angier and Tesla thought the machine wasn't doing anything - they put the hat (or cat) in there and nothing happened. But then Angier discovered all those hats and cats - the machine made clones! It just made them appear a distance away from the machine.
So when Angier performed his new Transported Man trick, he no longer needed that drunk double. He just went into the machine and made a clone of himself.
But he couldn't have two of him running around. So he made the trap door and had the Angier in the machine drown every night! The clone appeared on the balcony and took a bow. That is why he said he could only do 100 performances - look at all those bodies in tanks! That's why he had blind stage hands, so nobody could learn the secret.
I hope that answers your questions.

Danton died every time he used the machine, but he also made a clone of himself. every time he used the trick on himself it cloned himself and the clone appeared on the upper balcony, and the original danton would fall in a glass tub and drowned so nobody would know.

You remember the part where he walk down the hillside and there are hundreds of top hats? Well the machine that was made for him was kinda like a cloneing device! Everytime it was used it copied whatever was in the center! So then he had a copy of him he put in the machine so when the trap door opened it would land in the box and they had set it up so when it happened it killed the clone and he could go one free while him oponent went to jail for his murder! That way he felt like he was the best magician!
You understand?
