Its a circle of life...all living things have to die sometime. The best advice i can give you is to take the time and grieve for your late pet rat. when you are feeling better go to a pet store and see how you are when you see other rats. If you are OK with it ask the pet store employee to allow you to hold one and if you don't get overly emotional you are probably ready to get another pet. To ensure that your pets live the longest and healthiest life make sure that you are taking them to the vet regularly.

As a former keeper of rodents (the family to which rats belong) I can understand your feelings right now as some rats can be taught to do a few tricks and to respond to their name. Rats unfortunately live for around 3 - 4 years which is a tiny lifespan compared to something like a dog or a cat.
Each rat has got its own personality and they will bond with you in their own way. Whilst it is always sad to lose any pet, there will be a time when this sadness will pass to a point where you will feel comfortable to buy a new one (not replacement as you can't "replace" that of which you sadly lost).
When you are ready to take in another rat, go to the petshop/pet store and chose one that is about 8 weeks old that way your new pat will spend most of its life with you.
I hope you feel better soon and I am very sorry about your pet.

Any pet you get you will get attached to. Everything dies, Try to find a pet that lives a long time like a poodle(17-20yrs.) or a lizard. Some lizard can live to be 75 years old. Before you perchase one read up on them because they need u.v light and heat. You have to feed them the right food for which ever kind you get. They don't all eat the same thing. A bearded dragon lives a long time and they won't bite you. If you want a vegatarian then you would have to get an aguana. They don't live as long though and you have to spend 15 min. a day with them everyday or they will bite. Some frogs live a long time also.
I would wait a couple of months for a new pet to make sure you're emotioally ready.

See...here is the thing...everything dies. People die, pets die, even plants die.
Why did your pet rat die? Was it of old age or because he got sick?
I am sure you took excellent care of your pet rat. If you buy another one you will be "saving" him from the pet shop! :) You will give him a nice home and he will in turn offer you happiness and companionship. When it is his time to die, then he will die. But that's OK because it is part of nature! :)
Don't worry. Give yourself some time and when you are ready, buy another friend. Good luck!

Rat life span is normally 2 to 4 years old!!!
If you want to keep a rat again, go buy a pure breed which life span would be longer and choose a 1 month old rat!!!

Rats done make old bones, it really depends on the age of the rat but the average lifespan of a rat is 2 to 3 years. However, this is only a rough average.
Sorry to hear of your loss.

It is normal not be sure about getting another rat so soon, and it is also normal for you to feel the way you are feeling, that is to say..a bit of confusion for now.
It is hard to loose a animal of any size and of any type for we come to love them so much...
I understand your sadness and your fear for I had lost a close friend of mine who was a dog over a year ago, and at that time I swore up and down and inside out that I would never owned another dog as long as I lived for fear of loosing another dog again.
However that has changed and I am now a proud owner of a new dog and very happy with him at that.
I am sorry to hear you have lost your pet and you will heal in time.
Just remember that what you are feeling now is very normal, and it be good to allow to give yourself some time to get over the lost of your pet.

I understand your feelings; I have had similar feelings. But if having a pet is good enough that its death makes you sad, then it will be worth getting another one someday. You just need some time to grieve first. Rats are awesome.

Find out the reasons why your rat died.Im sorry for your loss by the way.
Make sure it has alot of room in it's cage with good bedding, water, and food. And rodents love exercise so an excercise wheel would be great.
