It happens if there are a lot of programs scheduled to load on startup. The startup can be faster if you remove some from the list

I have the same problem . You may have a virus or it may be the exact oppsite - you have a virus sweeping program on your laptop and it takes a few minutes to load and sweep the comp . Sometimes going to the "control panel" under the start menu and going to performance and maintenaince , then going to " free up space on your hard drive " and " rearrange items on your hard disk ... " will help . By clearing up your hard disk - stuff should load faster and by rearranging or "defragging" as geeks call it - your computer will have its files more orgainized so that it doesnt take as long to load . Also , if this helps , I noticed that when I look at the task manager (ctrl+alt+del) that my comp was loading up a lot of programs that I wasn't even going to be using and hadn't even clicked on them . Anyway , good luck .

That's what mine does when I need to do a system scan. Try doing a full system scan. It could take hours so don't plan on getting on the computer because it messes up the scan. Do it when your doing something else. When the scan is finished then save it if you have that option and restart your computer. That should help. If it doesn't then I'm not sure what's wrong. Oh, also after your scan make sure you delete all the adware, spyware, etc. That's probably your problem. Either that or a virus. Let me know if this helps.

It really could be many things:
Aging hardware
Lack of ram
Spyware
Junk
Viruses
Too many files on a small old hard drive.
Follow the directions below and it is "almost guaranteed" to help speed things up.
First download "crapcleaner" from http://www.ccleaner.com
(Note: unless you want the yahoo toolbar uncheck the option during install)
Run ccleaner and that will clean out all your unneeded temporary files, click the Issues section and backup and fix the registry issues.
Second download "spybot search & destroy" form http://www.spybot.info run a full scan and remove any adware/spyware and cookies it finds.
Third if you haven't got an Antivirus go over to http://free.grisoft.com and install the free version and do a scan.
After all this run a ccleaner clean again, then restart your system and see how its goes,
If it is still quite slow, surf on over to the ccleaner forums http://forum.ccleaner.com (I'm on there as user fireryone), and let them know whats going on and we'll work it out as best we can.
