Since we believe the universe had a starting point, it is entirely possible it will have an end. One scenario, called the Big Crunch states that when the universe stops its expansion, it will ever so slowly at first, but gaining speed as it goes, will begin to collapse. Eventually, it will become an infinitely small point of infinite density and infinite temperature. Will it then begin the cycle all over again with another Big Bang? Who knows?

A universe is just like numbers, it is infinite. You may think that you can count from 1 to 10 and stop because you feel that 10 is the final number but no, it is not final. There are still other numbers after 10. It is the same as that of the universe, astronomers has many and many things to discover outside our galaxy. They may think that they have reach the farthest planet or star or other forms of foreign objects but it is not yet the farthest.

The jury is very much still out. There have been, in the past, two possibilities supposed: either it will expand indefinitely, and eventually die a heat death, or the expansion will stop and everything will come back together in a big crunch. Recent discoveries of dark matter and possibly negative gravity have done nothing but add to the confusion.
