Does anyone know what onyxes are? Or happen to be? Ugghhh, I am trying to understand this book and it keeps using this word...

"Onyxes" is the plural of onyx. Onyx is a gemstone. There are different types or colors of onyx, like black onyx and white onyx, so "onyxes" would mean all types of them.

An Onyx is a black stone of some small value. I think they used to be rumored to have mystical powers of some sort.

Onyx is a gem. so onyxes are gems. Stones used in jewelry. Like in a cameo. Or the finger ring with a black stone, it is called a black onyx.
