You and you mom must have a lot of issues besides the fact that she would steal from her own child.(not insignificant) I'll bet your mother has a lot of problems with money, both overspending and saving it. She needs help. Go ahead an press charges, maybe it'll make her realise that she needs to get some sort of help.

I'd want to know why she didn't ask me first if it was ok to cash it. If you have a close relationship with your mom, she may have felt it was ok to do it - then explain later. The amount of the check would probably be the deciding factor as to whether I would be mad about it - but I'd most likely not press charges unless there was some bad blood between us and she really had no urgent need for the money.

I would first give her the option of paying it back. It would also depend what motivated her to do it. If it was greed, gambling habit or for drugs then I would report it as a theft. If it was to buy groceries, pay bills that sorta thing then I would still want her to pay me back but I don't think I would press charges.

Do you owe her any money? Did you do anything to her that would make her feelyou owed her a debt? If the answer to both is no, I would.
