The fees for rental cars will depend on where you pick it up and where you drop it off. Check around and see if you can drive someones car for free. People that are moving often need to have a car driven cross country; some rental car companies do to. Look in newspaper at library of cities near you to find something.

I drove cross country in my sports car 25 years ago and had a ball seeing friends along the way and even met some new ones. Take a cell phone for emergencies and when checking into a hotel, ask for room close to office or on the second floor. Don't park car with luggage showing. As a rule, there should be no problem. My sister did it to, before cell phones, and had no problem. I'd do it again.

If you are observant, you can tell when you're in a bad side of town, by a sleazy hotel, raunchy type people, someone is following you, etc. Have your itinerary & roads planned out and act like you are an experienced traveler.

course its safe you just got to use your head and not take stupid risks! and keep your money on you all the time! and if your worried about safety you can always get personal safety stuff, like pepper sparys and stuff. and if i was traveleing i would rather spend all the rental money on a cheap car or somethink.
