Smart thing would be to go see a doctor or go to a quick care or emergency center and have an xray. There has to be a reason why the knee "gave out."
In the meantime, ice the knee for 15 minutes every hour, no longer. Elevate the leg whenever possible. If you are a female do NOT wear heels or wedges.

Chances are the problem is with your hip, not the knee. I was diagnosed by MD with water on the knee and told to take meds daily to relieve the discomfort. The chiropractor I was working for at the time, saw me limping and offered to take a free xray - I saw the xray - one of my hips was over one full inch higher than the other! Every since then, I got to Chiro for monthly maintenance.

Knees do this now and again! If it happens a lot then see your doctor. Mine does do it a lot due to an accident a long time ago, which has now turned into arthritus. but it has taken many years to get to this point. Ask your friends, most will tell you that it has happened to them at some time!
