What are the average bond orders in the following molecules or polyatomic ions? Cl2- Emphasize the completion of the octet rather than any minimization of formal charge. Enter your answers as a sequence of numbers (one decimal place) separated by commas (for example, 1.3,1.0,1.5,2.0,3.0).
A) SO3
B) XeF4
C) Cl2

a)SO3

O<-S->O .. <-> O=S->O <-> O<-S=O
.. .. .ll .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..l .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .l
.. .. O .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .O .. .. .. .. .. .. .O

Because of resonance the 3 S-O bonds mix and become equivalent. You have 2 single bonds and a double bond mixing, thus the total bond order is 1.3

B) XeF4: you have 4 single bonds so the bond order is 1.0

C)Cl2: you have a single bond. Thus bond order 1.0

D)CN- is -C-triplebond-N so it has 3.0

E)NO2-

-O-N=O <-> O=N-O-
Because of resonance the 2 bonds mix and become equivalent. A double bond and a single bond mix, thus the bond order is 1.5

So the answer is

1.3,1.0,1.0,3.0,1.5
