Good question. Sometimes it is better to just remain silent and not comment.

Knowing when to comment or not is sometimes tricky, but I prefer to gauge my response or lack of a response because of who I might give any input. Even then, it is best to tread lightly about it until you get a sense of the response you receive.

That doesn't mean you are out of the woods, by any means, but at least, you can shut up before you really dig yourself into the old proverbial hole.

Well if it's something that will hurt or upset someone around you then that is a pretty good clue as to when to remain silent. Or if it's something that would just star unneccesary conflict then it's better to stay silent...pretty much you have to use your own common sense to detirmine if you shouldn't say something.

You lash out at the person who has put you in the situation to compromise someone elses feelings, rather than let them use you as the scapegoat.
If you see your best friend being unfaithful, you don't go to her/his partner and tell them, you have it out with them to do the decent thing.
It's a bit of a moral mine-field this one.
But never be seen as the one trying to split a couple up, no matter what the reason.

it's all in what you did, to keep it left unsaid. if you know that it will bother the other person, they why do it. so it would be in you, to really know the person who you are keeping things from. if you know what kind of reaction you'll get from them, with the things that you do....then that's when you'll know to keep silent. like i said before, if it's something that does bother the other person, put their feelings in front of your needs. in the long run, they'll cherish you forever for it. if it's something that you know won't bother the person, then say something.

just in case, you don't know if it will bother them, then let them know about it in a general sense. like, when talking to the person say, you know one of my best friends recently asked me about his/her situation and i don't know what to do. say it like it's your friends situation and see how that person reacts to the situation. if they react in an okay way, then say something a bit later on that situation. if they react in a negative way, then don't say anything.

You remain silent when you don't know what to say, or if you're going to say something negative.

When you can think of no constructive reason for saying it. You can always choose to speak up later. Choosing to shut up later is always too late.

usually common sense will tell most people when to speak and when to keep quiet. Unfortunately not every one has common sense.
