I would find help like everyone else said, but you can also do small things yourself.

Try looking at the text in smaller pieces.

Another thing that I've always found very helpful is to take notes as you go. So like every paragraph make a note on the side of what that meant to you, that way it focuses you on that section, and you'll know if you got it or not. Then you can go back and re-read what you read if you missed it.

I know this is going to sound funny, but, read tabloid magazines. I've heard of people learning to read that way. You could also get a tutor. I'm sure the college can help you with that. You might want to read things that interest you as well. I learned to read at a young age thanks to some Evel Knievel books. He interested me when I was in Kindergarten. Good luck & don't give up.

As cliche as this might sound, practice makes perfect! You might also want to get a tutor. Some colleges offer free tutoring services for reading and writing, so check to see if yours does. Good luck!

Check to see if they have a tutor in English at your college or maybe the local library does. The main thing is not to get discouraged but I really really urge you to seek the help of someone.

I'd do it but I already have a student through Project Literacy at my local library.
