No toxic chemicals or salt wanted. Its a small space I could dig up in a day with a spade, but I don't want the grass to just come back.

You must like gardening,i do too.Here is how i would go about that.I would section off pieces about 2 to 4 ft square
with a large knife,digging straight in about 2 to 3 inches deep .Then take a flat square shovel and remove the grass like a piece of sod. Most of the rooting system should come up with the sod.Shake the sod to drop the excess dirt left in the sods roots.Maybe you know someone who has some lawn repairs or blvd repairs to do and could use some extra sod.Once you start gardening,the leftover roots from the sod can be removed while preping your new garden.

Don't go to the bother of killing it. Dig or roto-till the area up. Once you have turned over all the dirt, collect all the large pieces of roots you see or chop them up with a shovel. The grass will die. You will be spending time in the garden with a hoe removing weeds, so just catch any grass that lives at that time.

you guys sure like to do a lot of senseless work...turn it over with a shovel. the exposed roots will kill the grass. in a week or two. till it up. rake it , plant your garden...thats what i did and never had a problem...keep gardening fun not work...

just cover it for a couple weeks with something that does not allow sunlight in. Then turn over as you make your garden. It won't come through the way it would if you just rototilled it.
