Absolutely.

In an average middle-class life, you can probably (hopefully) expect more happiness than pain, but perhaps not too much more. So it's a life worth living...but a 1/6 chance to win $1B has the expected utility of $167M.

Is the expected value of your life now, which is on average the middle class, worth more or less than $167M (factor in some estimated dollar value for life's happy memories such as weddings, childbirth, parties, etc.; but also factor in negative value from deaths, pain, stress, etc.)?

If it's significantly lower, then you should play Russian Roulette for $1B. In my case, my estimate is that my life is worth anywhere from $10M to $100M depending on my outlook that day. So the numbers require that I would play.

Of course. I could certainly use the cash, and I have no problem whatsoever with dying. It's a win-win situation for me.

Nope. But, I knew a lot of dying men who, on their death beds, offered the gods-that-be more money than that for just one more day of Life. Just one.
