The 4 sons together got 7/8 of his land. let x be the fraction that each son got. the equation is therefore
4x=7/8 divide both sides by 4
x=7/32

each son received 7/32 of Mr. Smith's land.

7/8 /4 = 7/32 part each

4 sons would total 28/32 and 1/8 left = 4/32
so total =1

Equation:

1 = 1/8 + x/4
or
x/4 = 1 - 1/8
