I can log in using an IP disguise software but there seems to be a forum within the forum that is only for certain members. i'm gathering evidence of someone i know posting false statements about me, to use in a possible libel lawsuit

Let it go and find something more productive to do with your time. At any rate, the heresay rules apply here and it will be difficult to prevail.If there is a second forum with a password what is said there is also protected by law.

You can ask the forum administrator to help you. I'm sure there are legal issues with breaking into unauthorized parts of a website. You can't use illegally acquired evidence in a court of law.

What someone says in a private forum can hardly be considered libel since it will only extend to the tiny amount of people that have access to that forum.

Mmhmm... sure. Well, to do anything like that you technically are "hacking". Although that term is used way to carelessly and basically insults real "hackers".
