I am by nature quiet, shy, soft-spoken and often kept to myself and I feel I can go further in life and in my profession if I have better people skills.

The most funny thing about this question is that an upper handed person(you) is asking the question.

If you are shy or quiet, you have upper hand. You just need to make an effort to initiate conversation with people next to you. Most people like to talk, not listen. If you just open up to them by saying "hi or how is your day?" you will hear long description about their day. Keep in mind that you have to listen somewhat and reply enough to get the conversation flowing. Ask about what they are doing or ask about recent news or something.

You should avoid gossiping. You can participate in such conversation, but you should not actively participate in it. "People skills" just means how you can get around people and be a pleasant person to have a conversation.

oh... have a big smile when you initiate@@!!!

Be helpful to your co-workers. If your work is finished ask if you can help them with their work. That is something people don't forget. Smile and act like you are very happy to be there. There is nothing worse in an office than people that are depressed or hate their jobs. If you want to get ahead in an office, it is sometimes necessary to be people pleaser. Those are the people that get noticed and promoted.

I think that people skills are very easy for me. Friendliness and helpfulness is my people skill. Some probably call me a kiss@ss,but guess what.I don`t care.I know i am not.To me it is more important,to help make someones life just a little more pleasant. They are just jealous, because they don`t know how to be a plain people-pleaser.
