The light may not go off right away unless the mechanic resets your system with his computer. Because your dad did this, I am thinking he doesn't have this equipment. If this was the only problem with your vehicle, the system will reset itself after so many miles or so many start-ups. This all depends on the model and make of the vehicle. It may be a few days before you see the light go off. Consult with a mechanic who specializes with your type of vehicle or look on the internet by your make and model. Some vehicles' lights have been known to malfunction and go off for no reasons, the driver inspection place would know which vehicles are known for these problems if yours happens to be one of them. Good luck. I had to change an oxygen sensor on a mitsubishi I owned and the light didn't go off for quite a while afterward.

Someone has to clear the codes from the car's computer. If the car was made after 1996, this is best done with a OBDII computer tool. AutoZone or one of the other auto-parts chains will usually do this for you for free, though if you're planning to repair cars even occasionally such a tool is a good investment; prices are now dropping to about fifty bucks.
You can also clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for maybe ten minutes, but this will make the car drive oddly for a while as well as clearing the presets from your car's radio. It's better to use the tool. It will also check for other problem codes that were stored in the computer and tell you other things that need attention.
If the oxygen sensor wasn't your only problem, expect the light to come back on in a couple of days.

You will have to do a 'hard' reset (It's not hard it's just called that). Warm up your car. You warm it up so things get to operating temps. Then turn it off. Take off the positive(+) battery cable. Leave off for 2 or 3 min. put it back on. Start car and drive on hi way if possible for about 10 miles. This gives the cars computer time to check everything at operating temps. If the light comes back on it may mean something else is wrong. Most auto zones will plug in to your cars computer and check the code and tell you what it reads.

Believe it or not you can't do anything about it unless you take it to a dealership. In order to turn the light off they need to plug your car into a computer and punch in the right code and the dealerships are the only ones who have the necessary codes. Personally, I just ignore mine.

it ought to characterize countless issues from important or minor maintenance. If there is an AutoZone or progressed less expensive automobile components shop on your area, take your vehicle to them. They do loose diagnostic screenings and it in basic terms takes seconds for the hand-held device to study the code and tells them whats incorrect which comprise your automobile. or you ought to in basic terms initiate by a track up with oil replace and filter out, new spark plugs, and so on. and take it from there. you are able to choose a sparkling O2 sensor, which will holiday those provider lighting fixtures furnishings additionally. The extra moderen automobiles with computers are very gentle and whilst the lighting fixtures furnishings come on, do no longer overlook with regard to the warnings, somethings approximately to break down.

You have to reset the system, remove the positive side of your battery cable then put it back on, this will reset the system and the light will go off, I had to do the same to my car.

You do not have to go to the Dealership unless its some weird car. Go to an Auto Zone or another parts store and ask them to scan it, and reset it for free. Alot of them do it now.

Ditto on removing the negative battery terminal. Removing it for a couple of minutes probably won't do it, as they have a capacitive memory in the ECU. A half hour should do it, at least that is what Subie owners do.
