Alpha Hs are attached to carbons that are next to carbonyls (C=O). Think of acetone HC3C(O)CH3. The Hs are alpha Hs. You can also think of Hs attached to a carbons with a leaving group as alpha Hs but the former is where you normally here the term. Beta Hs are attached to carbons that are one away from the carbon with the leaving group. Think of ethylbromide (CH3CH2Br). The Hs on the CH3 are beta Hs.
