you always want to try to get an account with private tracker sites they are the safest like
http://demonoid.com where they only open the registration a few times a month.
or open ones like
http://torrentbox.com
http://torrentspy.com
http://thepiratebay.org
client i use & the best
http://uTorrent.com
Tip
Do not just download torrents at random without looking at other peoples reviews on the download, people will say if it has a virus or doesnt work or if its fake ect..
hope that helps

1. after u download the torrent, don't open it.
2. scan the file for virus.
3. if it detect a virus, turn off your system restore and delete the file.
if it didn;t detect any virus/ than it's okey to open.
p/s after u delete the file, reboot your computer and turn system restore back to on.
-
don't download any size that's like below 100kb depanding the file.
or search google if the size is about the same.

Well, your never 100% safe, but I would recommend mininova.org. Of the 50+ times I have downloaded, I got a virus once. But if you use BitComet as your client, it has a virus scan which allows you to scan it before you open it. Also Bitsoup.org(might be .com, not sure)is safe from what I hear.

www.scrapetorrent.com is currently the best source. It searches most of the engines, and there is no registration required.
While scrape is good for general search queries, there are other sites dedicated to specialty torrents, and you should research that as well.
