It doesn't have any deep meaning or explanation to it...John carpenter wanted to make this film, a horror picture that he wanted to make his...It was his creation, he wanted to be so original like Hitchcock and George A. Romero were with their creations...Carpenter idolized Hitchcock because he created the modern serial killer....Look at every serial killer or immortal killer, they are all stylized and have their own unique touch...carpenter had to give Michael a look, he had to make him stand out and be unique..I'm quoting him..."I wanted to create a monster that people would never forget, I wanted to make it so that he would stand the test of time, and look...Michael meyers is still around." They also did not have much of a budget, so they had to go with a William Shatner Halloween mask, which they painted over and took off all the expression because they wanted the face to be blank, and no actor can have such a blank face while killing their victim....He wanted to show a face that was completely blank and pure evil.....And pretty much, that's why they went with the mask...They needed to create a look for Carpenters killer that would be remembered forever, they had to stylize it....

When he was a kid his sister was supposed to take him trick or treating. He was gonna be a clown. She decided to have sex with her boyfriend instead. He was already not right in the head. He found the mask on the floor and put it on before he killed her and her boyfriend. It is his "binkie" like a coping mechanism. He wears it all the time.

At first it was to hide his identity. Now, after years of fighting and being faught against: it is because his face is SO disfigured. Just like Jason on Friday the 13th.

If you were being brutally murdered would you want to see the face expressions of the man killing you? Not me...he can hide behind his mask all he wants.

I'm going with Amber C.

I had no idea horror flicks had such depth and dimension to them.

Because it's f@#kin scary.
They didn't have the budget to pay a 'big name' for the role, so they improvised.
