I just don't understand why were over there fighting for their country when we should be protecting our own. Who's watching our backs?

If we pulled in and guarded just our own borders, what would happen in the rest of the world? Right now, the fear of B-52s keeps most of the 2-bit dictators in line. If there was no danger of suddenly being blown to bits from 30,000 feet, these little regional conflicts would flare up all over. (don't even think about the UN, they can't even police their own organization). I agree that we've ignored our own borders far too long. We seem to have this arrogant assumption that nobody will ever come here and mess with us. Even 9/11 couldn't wake us up to that danger.

Additionally, if the terrorists in the muslim world weren't focused on the US forces in Iraq, what would they be focused on instead? Their publicly stated goal is the destruction of our way of life. Not our nation, but our way of life. That goes way deeper. Do you think they'd just put up their homemade bombs and play cards in their caves for the rest of their lives if we left? They'd be either attacking us here or our interests elsewhere if we weren't killing them by the thousands in Iraq right now. Our 'decadent' lifestyle infuriates them. They lose sleep thinking about it. It is the driving force behind everything they do. Our existence (in their minds) is contrary to God's will, so they are obligated to destroy us. It will guarantee them a greater reward in Heaven if they do. Religious matters cause the rational mind to cease functioning. If you don't believe that, look into Christian history. I'm rambling.....sorry.
We are over there fighting so we won't be over here fighting.

In warfare - whether it's military conflict, or economic - having all your forces in your own territory is usually not wise.

By fighting somewhere ELSE, we keep from having to fight HERE. It's called a 'forward deployed defense' - It's better to fight further from what you want to protect.

Here's the concepts as to why we are fighting in Iraq, and it's not what you're going to read in the media, or hear from the Liberals.

There are really several reasons -

1: Iraqis deserve to be free. Free from a murdering despot who was feeding people into industrial plastic shredders, raping children (both his sons particularly), gassing entire villages, committing genocide (Kurds and Marsh Arabs), and raping the enviroment (draining the marshes). The US promotes freedom - this is a good reason.

2: Saddam was a clear and present danger to the US - He was backing terrorists with funding, training, weapons, and intelligence. While his connections to al Queda (recently confirmed) weren't that strong, he was well known as a major terror supporter. It was in our national interest to take him out to break these links and help reduce the terror threat to our country.

3: In support of over 17 UN resolutions and in concluding the original Gulf War (which ended with a Cease-Fire which Saddam was in repeated violation of).

4: This is the most important one - To destabilize the region. That's the one that confuses so many people. Why would we WANT to destabilize the Middle East? Because the status quo there is hideous and dangerous to the West as a whole and the United States in particular.

Like it or not, the world economy and technology runs on oil. We need it. You need it. Everyone needs it. The nations that control access to it are dictatorships who are VERY anti-West. We would like to see those governments replaced with democracies - Democracies usually ally together and work together to make lots and lots of stable money.

If we can establish a stable democracy in Iraq, the idea will spread. It's already destabilizing Iran and there are signs it's spreading in Saudi Arabia and Syria as well.

Imagine a Middle East with citizens as free and as prosperous as those in Germany and Japan...Imagine how well the world's economy will react to THAT...

That one change would protect the US and US interests for centuries to come.

And THAT is why we are fighting in Iraq - The same sorts of analysis are why we are fighting in other countries and why we intervened in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Kosovo, and so on.

Hope this helps!

We are fighting because of a lie that somehow our misguided President told the American people, he listened to the wrong people which he seems to have some afinity for from what I know. I mean I know that he relies heavily on NAMI propaganda as does the rest of our government, so I know that he is listening to the wrong people. It is also kind of a religious war and there are other things going on too. I think it would be better if our men were home, but now that we are in what is the safe way to get out? Do we have to, do we need to, stay until there is some kind of resolution to this now that we are in? I am thinking that this may be the case and not just because the Pres says, he was wrong in going in without being asked by them, he was wrong in the way he did it, but if we pull out to quick it could be just as dangerous for our own country as not and could be more dangerous since we went in the way we did? I don't know the right answer here for sure? I wish my dad was alive he would know and understand this and he would be able to make me understand too. I feel sure that he might say we have to stay and do the job now that we are in? I don't know, it is not a good war, but what war ever is?

This administration foolishly did not take the time to understand the culture of these countries and blundered badly! They also did not learn from the lessons of Viet Nam. Basically it was an impulsive POLITICAL decision based on creating fear within our own country by stating erroneously that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
In my view, they should have poured this money into preparing for terrorist acts within our own borders; ie.preparing the public health system for biological attacks, finding effective ways to examine containers coming into our ports, to have better plans to deal with natural diasters such as Katrina, etc. Think of all those billions of dollars and all those lives being wasted. I am very concerned that we simply have created MORE future terrorists who have seen relatives killed or injured. And, yes, I love our country. It is the best in the world!

I do wonder why we have 50,000 soldiers in Germany and elsewhere in Europe and thousands more in military bases all over the world. The U.S. spends more on its military than all the other countries in the world combined. Maybe its time that the Germans and the Japanese came to the U.S., built bases and protected us for awhile.

I doubt that all those soldiers overseas makes us more safe - One of Osama bin Laden's main reasons for attacking us on 9/11 was that we have soldiers stationed in the land of Mecca, which he considers to be Holy and not a place for unbelievers. A second reason is that he believes that the U.S. soldiers are there to protect a regime that he considers to be oppressive - so that we can continue to get cheap oil.

Its possible that we are making enemies faster than we can kill them.

The publicly stated goal of the terrorists is not the destruction of our way of life - rather their goal is to get us out of the Middle East.

We fight in other countries because it stabilizes our own in some clandestine way....i.e. war in Iraq keeps gas prices up which fuel a free economy system.... we work more to pay more.....we fight in afghanistan for a show of force to the world that "american" vigilance knows no bounds....
Every war can be justified by a politician but never buy a grieving mother. Our country will not be attacked by any one country but by a horde of smaller nations who will want to dismantle us for their own gain...I agree...we are going about our foreign policy all wrong.

Here's the logic (!):

We went into Afghanistan to destroy alQaida.
Then Bush decided he wanted to invade Iraq
So he claimed Saddam had WMD (false)and links to al-Qaida (false)
So Congress voted to authorize the invasion and we shifted our efforts from Afghanistan to Iraq
Havingg defeated Saddam, Bush decided (remember, hes the "decider") that the real reason we went ino Iraq was to get rid of Saddam and "bring democracy to the region.

NOW--we are in Iraq to defeat the terrorists (that our own military says we created). Meanwhile, we are still in Afghanistan fighting the terrorists because they've had all this time to regroup

And, of course, despite the fact that we've left our borders open (and our ports) and alQaida has proved in Madrid and London they can still mount terrorist attacks--but HAS NOT tried to attack us again, Bush now says we have to "win" the fight between the sheites and sunnis (still haven't figured how you work that)--so we have to stay in Iraq, instead of shifting our focus to Afghanistan where the terrorists are.

Now, doesn't that make perfect sense?

LOL

The dow jones chart shows the market began rising from it's lowest levels of the Bush presidency in March, 2003. Right after the invasion of Iraq, (should I say liberation?) the stocks began to rise and have ever since. Obviously, the war is over economic interests.

We are fighting to protect our own backs. Do you not study history?? When U R #1 U have to show it. U Cannot stay static or your enemies will take this as a sign of weakness. Protect your own and next your allies. Do not neglect your interests.

Generally, the idea is to take the fight to terrorists overseas, rather than fight the terrorists on our own shores. When you have state sponsors of terrorism, like Iran, or terrorists hiding in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Iraq, you take the fight to them. If you keep them on their heels there, they are less likely to attack us here.
