HP, Canon and others sell their printers without the essential USB cables, Why? Is it to save money? Won't most of us be happy to pay the additional cost instead of having to look for the USB cable separately.

No it is not to save money, it is a way to make you spend more money and that is the only reason.

There are two main reasons for doing so.

!: Keeps the cost the printer down
2: "Most" people have already purcahsed a printer and are replacing it, so they already have a cable.

BTW, Dollar Stores here sell USB cables for (guess what) ONE DOLLAR! They work FINE!

I think because so many people are going wireless, also some printers are farther away from the computer than the standard 6 or 8' cable

I guess you are mis communicated, USB Printers come with USB cables. They can never be shipped without one. If you got such piece without the cable, complain to the office, or the concerned manufacturer.
