Make a slide show using photos depicting his life with some music that he likes.
Make a display table of photos, using wedding pictures. baby picture etc. Use pictures when he was young and handsome. This will show his grandchildren that he was once young, just like they are now. They will look at him in a different way.
Display his achievements throughout his life.
Use a lace table cloth. Use easels for displays.
Have music playing from the 50's. He will remember the 50's.
If he is able, someone should dance with him at least once.
Have one or two family members speak and tell some funny things that happened in the family. You could also invite anyone that would like to tell their favorite story about him.
Food and where to have his party should be discussed with family. That way they will feel more involved and want to help you.
"Happy Birthday to your Father."
Make a Happy Birthday Banner with lots of balloons.

Hi there. ^^
We usually celebrate my grandmothers birthday with a little reunion. Although, I don't know much about the culture in your country, back here in the Philippines, gathering with those special to you is a way to touch a granny and older peoples birthday. because it actually touch them.
my mom use to say that we do it because it gives our grandmother something good to recall about during the last day of her life.
Those people my granny had not seen for such a long time manage to come at her birthday and i believe its really worth it.
Try to do something like that, and I guess that would really give your dad a wonderful and meaningful 88th year of his life.
Good luck! ^^

Sounds like a great time to have a reunion, especially if there is a friend or relative he has not seen for quite some time.
Hey! I know! You could do a "This is your life" party! Here is a web link to explain what I am talking about, since there is probably only a few people on the earth that still remember it. Bet your dad is one of them!

Congratulations! Can you have a party for him with the whole family and some friends? I think that's the most important thing, to be around those that he loves. My mom just had her 80th birthday and we went out to eat with my cousins. She really enjoyed that. Another idea he might like is to make a scrapbook for him with pics and highlights of his and the families life. Maybe even add a family tree.

I would suggest doing what you normally do, only maybe invite a few more people over. The last thing I'd want my dad to think, is that I was bidding him a fair well.

Arrange for him to do something that he never found the time to do, but can still physically and/or mentally enjoy. Often times we go through life and don't do the things we'd most like to do because everything else is placed before our wants.

Take him to a restaurant you usually wouldn't go to. Then, throw him a surprise party! No one is ever too old to have one!
