okay i have been wondering this, you know how when you shoot it from behind the three point line and you make it but you land on the other side of the line, they still count the three point shot. what if someone could jump so far that they jumped from behind the three point line and dunked it or did a lay up? would they count it as a three point shot or would they make it a two point shot?

I love the question, and wouldnt go so far as to say it is impossible. One day, this could happen. We often wonder if anyone could ever be better than MJ....well...if someone comes along and can do that, they would be in the same class as MJ and DrJ.
Both MJ and Dr.J jumped from the foul line, which is equivilent to only a few feet in front of the three point if running from the sideline and going in.
With medicine improving, shoes improving, training improving, people getting healthier in general...I think it could happen one day.
Maybe not in my lifetime..but someday. Once it happens, the NBA and/or NCAA will change the rules saying once you leave the 3 point line, and touch the rim, it negates the 3 and makes it a 2.
Once more than one person can do it, they will raise the rim to 11ft and move the 3 point line back another foot.
I like the question Asker!

The rulebook states that a shot counts for 3 points if the shooter begins his shot beyond the 3-point line. As long as the shooter is behind the arc when he (or she) jumps, the shot counts as 3 points regardless of where the shooter lands or at what point during the jump the ball is released.

hahaha!! great question man!!

assuming somebody could do it, it would still be a 3.

there are players who launch 3's jumping outside the 3 pt line and releasing the ball inside the 3 pt line, and it still counts as a three.

now if somebody can dunk the ball or lay it in from the 3pt line, that would be spectacular!! lol

I doubt they would, mostly because the rule states that if you land inside the three point line when shooting a three point shot, it counts as three points. This means you must be shooting your shot near the three point line. If you are not shooting your shot from around that line while you are airborne, then you are attempting a two point basket. Your point is almost a loophole, but not quite.

the 3 point line was invented cuz of wilt chamberlain. wilt had a 51 inch verticcal, and he could lay the lay the ball up from the freethrow line so imagine what he could do from the 3pt line with a runiing start. also shooters like steve car are known to jump gehind the 3pt line, and land a few inches in front of where they started

Sure... If Superman was playing and he jumped from behind the 3 point line and dunked it, I'm sure they'de give him 3 points... but since no human can do that, the issue really hasn't come up.

No you can only make a three point shot by shooting a three pointer. You can make a three-point play by making a dunk or lay-up and getting fouled.

it would be still a 3pt shot, but what are you thinking is very impossible. it is the same as a player throws the shot on the other end of court or in the middle of the court and went it they count it as a 3pt shot unless somebody fouls them and hit the shot plus the bonus free throw then it will be a 4pt shot.
