When composing with Lennon before the breakup of The Beatles, he wrote some of the loveliest, evocative and compelling songs I've ever heard. Now he seems to have sold out to fame, popularity, & money. I'm astounded and saddened at the poor quality of his songs. (eg, 'Someone's knocking at the door, let em in')

Did he simply sell out or was there a certain magic in Lennon-McCartney? *shrug*

He was OK up until Venus and Mars and went downhill afterwards. He was never a good lyricist but he could write tunes. He's still entertaining live, but I preferred. George. The songs you mention were the beginning of the end and the last Wings album I bought.

His first album was excellent.
I have my own theory as to why his music has suffered post-Beatles:

1. He worked very hard in the early days, because he was driven by the will to succeed (he was hungry).

2. The rivalry between him & John Lennon, which continued for a while after the Beatles broke up, because if you will remember (I do!), at the end, there was talk about Lennon being the "real genius" behind the band, in my opinion, mostly because he was getting so much publicity through his stupid political stunts with Yoko Ono.
After a couple years of hits, he had nothing to prove any longer.

Remember, he wrote some pretty cheesy songs with the Beatles too, which John always complained about being "Paul's grandma music".
Songs like "when I'm 64", "your mother should know", etc are pretty corny for a wild 60's band.

There's some AWESOME material in the 70's McCartney catalog. Listen to the songs Uncle Albert or Band on the Run...if you don't think they are as good as some of the finest Beatles stuff, you're crazy. He may not have been as consistent, but he was still a great songwriter.

Take a closer look and you'll see that there's some REALLY bad songs in the Beatles catalog too (Revolution #9, Girl, Honey Pie, Savoy Truffle, When I'm 64). I really don't think he started slipping in quality until sometime in the 80's. And then it was probably because he got too old. LOL.

I think his music after The Beatles was good, like Maybe Im Amazed, Band On The Run , Live or Let Die, and a few others. Honestly i like John Lennons music after the Beatles better than paul's.

Well I personally like some of the Post Beatle McCartney songs though Lennon was my fav. Yes some of his songs were rather well I guess he said it best "Silly love songs" but others were really good. though "Let em in" not my fave, Maybe I'm Amazed is great.

Of course there was magic in Lennon / McCartney, but his Wings work in the 1970's was great. Band on the Run, Wings over America were great.

Ebony & Ivory was the breaking point. Anything prior to Ebony & ivory was great, anything after is lame.

Yes he did write his best work with John. But I like more Paul songs than I do John songs from after the break up. I think that they inspired each other to write better songs than they could on their own. Also, if one of them had a bad idea for a song then the other one could tell'em to write something else or correct it. Once they broke up there was no censor or editor for their bad songs. I love each Beatle and I can admit that each one has had terrible songs, Not just Paul.

I sympathize he lost a giant genuis in Lennon as did we all.
that kind of insight and talent is wasted on some but not I.
what McCartney has is greatly diminished as was all of Lennons fans . Remember the good side and try not dwell on the negative so much there is nothing good that comes from it.

I think Lennon and McCartney wrote their best songs when they worked together. I can't stand any of the Wings songs. I think people only bought them out of loyalty to Paul.
