I assume this is meant to be a multiple choice question....so the answer has to be the third choice: "It opened up a western front in the European theater of war".

Two of the answers clearly have nothing to do with the invasion of Europe at Normandy, France (the ones referring to the Pacific and Mediterranean are clearly not the right answers.)

The opening of an "eastern front" actually occurred along and close to the Russian border.
