Depending on what your tub is made of, most older tubs have a built up residue of spoap scum. There are two products I use to remove this in the tub, shower walls and glass doors. First one to try is greased lightning. You can find this at
wal-mart. Spray on dry surface heavily. It is best to do only one area at a time, starting in the tub and working up, let set for a few minutes then I use a white scrubber (also found at wal-mart in the cleaning section) it has a white plastic handle and white plastic like scrubber sponge that will not scratch surface. No bristles. They cost .97 cents and can be rinsed and reused a few times. Last go over entire area with Clorox Clean-up to disenfect and brighten. Rinse well and repeat if needed. Scotch brite has a cleaning sponge that if used with greased lightning on the fixtures will have them shining like new. If this doesn't work try a product called "awesome" bought at Dollar General stores. Cost $1.00. I don't dillute with water for heavy stains. (The scotch brite cleaning pads works better with this product than the scrubber pad. ) Do same process as described above. good luck

Probably what has happened is the finish is off of the bath tub, not that it is so dirty. If Mr. Clean Eraser doesn't work, the finish is gone.

Sounds like you just anwered your own question.
If you love your tub too much to get a new one then....
Check with your local Lowes (because they sponsor Jimmy Johnson) LOL
You maybe able to resurface it yourself.
Or
Spend the money and get it restored professionally.
