I just got a data connectivity wire for my LG VX5300 and I got it connected and everything. Then I think I found a driver and installed it on it but when I plugged the USB back in with the phone connected to it, it doesn't recognize it at all. I have Verizon as my carrier. How can I get the ringtones I made on my cellphone via the USB cord?

There is a somewhat universal application called BitPim that is used to transfer files to locked phones such as yours. On an unlocked phone on a GSM network, transferring audio and video is just plug and play, but Verizon plays a bit differently at this.

They don't WANT you to be able to do this, because they want you to pay $3 per 30-second audio clip that you download, which is completely outrageous. Therefore, they lock the file transfer feature on the phone so that you cannot just plug it in and transfer it. That's where BitPim comes in.

BitPim (and I checked in the help file, it does support the VX5300, so you're in luck!) connects to your phone, and allows you to just drag and drop files directly to it. However, you have to make sure that your phone has that much free memory available. If you have a transFlash card or something like that, it's not really an issue, but if you're reliant on the built-in memory, you have to be careful (mine has only 8 MB, 5 of which are used by the OS!), meaning you have to resize and downsample all your audio so that you can fit more music.

As far as converting and clipping audio files so that you can get whatever part of the song you want, I recommend Audacity, which is a free and open-source audio editor which I personally use, and, while it isn't exactly intuitive on first glance (not to me, anyway) once you've used it for a while you get the hang of it, it's a very powerful program. I've included the links to both of these open-source programs in my source list, but feel free to send me an IM or Email if you have additional questions I can help with!
