DVDs can hold more information than CDs. In general either can hold any digital information, but regarding media, CDs are more known to hold music and DVDs are known to hold movies (just because of the amount of information necessary to store a movie). But both can hold files, pictures, music, you name it - your limitation is space, and the software you use to burn the disks.

DVD-R = a dvd that is writeable once, but cannot be rewritten (you cannot erase what you burn onto it).
DVD-RW = a dvd that can be erased and written to multiple times.
CD-R = a cd that is writeable once, like a DVD-R
CD-RW = a cd that can be written multiple times, like a DVD-RW.

You will need a CD burner to burn CDs, and a DVD burner to burn DVDs - they use different technology. Nowadays you can get one device that does both. Good luck!

some burners are only compatible with certain brands of CD or DVD media. Also, since the two are the same size, you need to check that you aren't putting a DVD into a CD burner, although a CD will work in a DVD burner. You can use any of them for any type of file (music, video, documents, etc.). Unless you have a *lot* of pics to put on a disk, go with a CD-R, because once they're on it, they don't come off. CD-RW is rewritable, meaning you can make changes to the files that are there and re-save or delete them. DVDs work pretty much the same way except there are some different writing technologies (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and BluRay), and hold gigabytes (1000s of megabytes) of information.
To move files from a floppy to a CD/DVD, just have the correct disk in your burner, and drag the files from the A: drive to the burner (use two seperate windows), just like if you were moving them from your C: drive to your burner.

All of those will work for pictures, files, or whatever, but you copy it as a data disc. The floppy should work too, to copy from, that is. Of course if you want to burn DVD's, make sure your burner has that capability. Most combo drives will play DVD's but not burn them. RW just means you can copy them over and over again, but those kinda suck, in my opinion.
