They haven't actually taken the time to study. But let me suggest, that instead of looking at the initial exchange as one you must win, and by doing so make them feel stupid and turned off by the whole process, that you say I can see you don't have the answer at hand so in all fairness, go get some facts and we'll continue this debate tomorrow afternoon?
Tell them you really are interested in hearing what they can come up with but be prepared because they might just actually go study.
You should encourage them to take an interest in politics and get involved and informed, not just bash them with a barrage of opinions and repeated rhetoric until they slink away and consider you a jerk.
Do us all a favor and bring more young people into the political scene by being intelligent in your debating.

I think you should have a little more tolerance for the opinions of 18-22 year old republicans. They have a difficult task trying to find the truth with all the liberal / socialist propaganda being thrown at them. I give them a lot of credit for not buying into it as you obviously have.
