Garage now says it is the knock sensor (not so sure). What is that and what does it do? Car is running fine with plenty of pick up and no pinking that we can tell. If that is replaced and light still comes on, any ideas about what else could be the problem.

Where are you getting it scanned? If the knock sensor needs replacing then do it. But are they 100% sure. It could be the gas cap to threaded on right it could be an O2 sensor. Does the car have a smell of gas or rotten eggs(sulphur) It could be the catalytic converter. All those will make the check engine light come on.

The knock sensor retards the spark if preignition takes place. Preignition, or spark knock, is when the fuel air mix ignites too soon, before the piston has come to the proper place at top of the cylinder. Preignition is often incorrectly called "valve noise" because it sounds like tapping valves, except it doesn't happen all the time.

The knock sensor is like a small microphone (usually a pietzo-electric pickup) that "listens" for spark knock. If it detects it, the computer will retard the spark a bit to prevent it.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance. Go to any auto parts stores that do free engine checks though. Too many times the mechanic wants to stiff you for a job not really needed.

The book is the best bet. Here is for the ignition light on.

9 times out of 10 it is a O2 sensor. When your light is on your car is running in want is called limp mode and may not get the best gas mileage
