Mine loved his remote control trucks called, "My first RC-dump truck and My first RC-tow truck (I think). They were only like $10 each. Really simple to operate, for a 2-yr old. I found them at Walmart!

Age specific books. 2 year olds love it when you read to them. Then, when he is older he will cherish the books, the time spent with him one-on-one & the memories made together. With this gift you may also be giving him a lifetime love of reading....which we all know is a good thing.

A truck; try the bigger one and if he loves to read, try to buy a couples of books suitable for his level. Stationery is also good, try colour pencils or magic marker along with colouring books.
I don't think soft toys are suitable.

Go to the nearest furniture store and ask for an empty box. It sounds cheap but they'll love it. You could even fill it with bubble wrap for good measure.
