i went to my appt. last week and they checked the heartbeat of the baby and they said it was irregular (skipping a beat) but other than that the heartbeat was the right speed. my nurse said they have to listen to the heartbeat on some kind of machine and that it is probably nothing to worry about. has anyone ever been through this? i just cant get this out of my mind...

Yes. my 23 weeker right not has an funky heartbeat going on. Each time i go they monitor it. it is at the right speed for the most part but every few beats or so it skips. Some babies have this. Most will grow out of it by the time they are born. and if not by the time they are born with in a year or so. Most of these children go on to have normal healthy lives. They are just monitored close until we can all be assured nothing will happen to them

As long as i can feel her move i am content and try not to worry about much else

I'm a mother of three and I know what it is to worry about the little tiny one in there.

But an irregular heart rhythm is usually benign and nothing to worry about.

The most common cause of an irregular heart rhythm is when the top part of the heart beats too early (premature atrial contraction). Sometimes this premature beat is transmitted to the bottom part of the heart; other times the communication between the top and bottom part of the heart is interrupted after a premature beat.

An early beat that is transmitted or blocked will cause an irregularity in the heart's rhythm. These premature atrial contractions are very common in the second half of pregnancy and usually don't cause any problems. They may persist after the baby is born, but usually go away by one month of life.

These premature beats can cause problems in a small percentage of cases if multiple consecutive premature beats occur.

Your OB might follow the heartbeat more closely now from now on to reassure you and herself/himself. A fetal EKG can best define and analyze the baby's heartbeat.
