I have a Native American proverb for you:

"A Native American Elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: 'Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time.' When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, 'The one I feed the most."

It's from the book Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda.

What you have to understand is that the two sides of you might not be evil or good. My halves are from that Relient K song about apathy. The half of me is all about apathy and the other half just doesn't care, sometimes leading me into the things I shouldn't do. You naturally feel the need to do good, but the evil side is simply deception. The only way for the "evil self" to override your "better self" is to know when and how you are being tricked. Listening to your cricket-I mean conscience will help you much.

Within us all there is the brain and The Mind. The individual brain gathers and stores information that has been fed into it. This can be good or evil information.

The Mind is different. It is the same within everyone. It knows right from wrong. The Mind is the Tutor with-in. It is in-tuition.

Depending on which one you are using and looking at life from, this will affect how you behave, or misbehave.

How to separate them is done by seeing if the information or knowledge you are using at any specific time has been gathered in your lifetime and only shared amongst some people, or if it is and has always been Intuitively known by everyone.

There is no better self or evil self. There are only choices and consequences. Think about what you want and make the choice that produces that result. If you make a choice that you regret, look for the lesson in it. Before long you will start making choices that reap positive results.
One must become master of his own mind it one wants to be free.

Our sinful nature is strong because we inherited it from Adam and Eve. That's what it means to be "fallen." It means we don't naturally choose what is good - though we should.

It is a battle we fight until the day we die, but it gets easier as we learn self-mastery.

God can help us fight temptation. And fasting and doing penance help to toughen us up for the spiritual fight. The idea is if you can't do something simple like deny your body food, how can you deny your body a sin that it craves?

On the positive side you can "feed" your better nature by giving it good things. That means don't feed your soul with garbage and trash like pornography, bad books, bad movies and bad people.

Your evil self always wins because its easier to give in to temptation. And its more fun.

Ego is our nature; we should use it, never try to override it, but enhance it. It's our nature, use it or it will use you. Denial will never work. Repression doesn't help either.
